POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Senior Director of Equity and Student Engagement, the Director works with school and District administration to represent the school’s athletic and activities programs at the local community, league, district, and state levels, oversees all sports team activities, meetings, and matches or games, and supervises athletic personnel in order to ensure compliance with Governing Policies, District Regulations and Procedures, and the appropriate state and federal laws and guidelines. This position requires knowledge of District procedures and policies, the ability to assume responsibility and work effectively under pressure while maintaining confidentiality, and the demonstration of strong interpersonal skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Strategic Leadership & Program Vision
Lead the districtwide vision to increase student connectedness across all grade levels and school communities through athletics and student activities.
Expand student participation and improve athletics and activities program quality to strengthen opportunities for student leadership and cultivation of durable skills outlined in the district’s Portrait of a Graduate. and.
Develop, implement, and evaluate policies, procedures, and frameworks that govern athletics, activities, ASB operations, field trips, and Title IX compliance across the district.
Use data, including participation rates, demographic equity analyses, and program outcome metrics, to inform decision-making, identify gaps, and drive continuous improvement.
Athletics Program Administration
Provide direct oversight and leadership to building Athletic Directors at all three high schools, supporting them in the recruitment, selection, supervision, and evaluation of coaches.
Oversee all middle school athletics programs, including the scheduling of officials, facilities and the creation of game and meet schedules.
Attend and represent ISD at KingCo Athletic Directors meetings, WIAA district and state meetings, WASBO conferences, and other required professional meetings; serve on committees and in leadership roles as appropriate.
Serve as the district’s primary liaison to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), ensuring compliance with all WIAA requirements and advocating for the district’s interests at the regional and state levels.
Build and maintain strong relationships with booster clubs, parent organizations, youth sports leagues, and community partners to advance student opportunity and program visibility.
Champion a culture of sportsmanship, equity, inclusion, and student-centered support across all athletic and activity environments; model professional conduct and high ethical standards.
Collaborate with district communications staff to ensure timely, accurate, and engaging coverage of athletics and activities programs.
Administer intramural and interscholastic athletics programs districtwide, ensuring alignment with WIAA rules, ISD policies, and applicable federal and state regulations.
Oversee the master athletic calendar, ensuring alignment of staffing, transportation, facility scheduling, and event logistics across all sport seasons and post-seasons.
Develop and maintain Athletic Handbooks and Coach’s Handbook; coordinate annual review and updates to ensure compliance with WIAA rules and district policies.
Pre-screen all coaching applicants; participate in head coaching interviews; oversee building-level coach selection, supervision, and evaluation processes.
Advise on equipment replacement cycles, long-range financial planning, and resource allocation strategies that promote equity and efficiency across all programs.
Identify and pursue opportunities for supplemental funding, including grants, sponsorships, facility agreements, and community partnerships, to enhance program capacity.
Provide input on extracurricular salary schedules; oversee and monitor fundraising processes associated with athletics and activities programs.
Plan, organize, and facilitate regular professional development and training for Athletic Directors, coaches, and activity supervisors.
Provide strategic oversight of athletic facility scheduling, maintenance standards, capital improvement priorities, and event readiness across the district’s three high school campuses and associated athletic venues.
Provide leadership and collaboration to building Athletic Coordinators, facilitating collaboration, co-planning, and problem solving.
Organize and host district interscholastic athletic events, tournaments, and championships, including the scheduling and management of required officials.
Establish and enforce systemwide standards for athletic venue safety, accessibility, and event supervision; respond promptly to safety concerns and incidents.
Coordinate with transportation services to ensure appropriate scheduling of buses and vehicles for athletic events, activities, and field trips.
Provide leadership for reform initiatives that promote differentiated competition, equitable opportunities, and increased student access across all athletic programs.
Provide leadership and oversight to Activity Coordinators, coaches, and related extracurricular personnel through clear systems, standards, and accountability structures.
Build leadership capacity across the athletics and activities system through coaching, mentorship, succession planning, and targeted professional learning aligned with district goals.
Take timely and appropriate action when staff performance or conduct does not meet established expectations, coordinating with Human Resources as necessary.
Student Activities & ASB
Provide district-level leadership and coordination to building Activity Coordinators across all secondary schools, facilitating collaboration, co-planning, and consistent implementation of student activities and events.
Oversee the ASB Superintendent Leadership meeting structure to support ongoing student voice, feedback, and collaboration between the superintendent and ASB student leaders.
Collaborate with the coordinator of the Board Student Representative program to ensure alignment of student leadership and student voice systems at the district administrative building.
Support and oversee the development of student leadership programs, club structures, and extracurricular offerings that promote equity, inclusion, and broad student participation.
Ensure club advisor training is current and consistent; develop and maintain district-level resources to support advisor effectiveness.
Monitor and advise on ASB budget development and expenditure processes at the building level; collaborate with district business services to ensure fiscal integrity and compliance with state requirements.
Respond to escalated activity and ASB issues, providing guidance to building administrators and coordinators on complex or contested matters.
Field Trip Systems & Oversight
Administer and continuously improve the district’s field trip approval and management systems, ensuring compliance with ISD policies and applicable state regulations.
Review and approve extended, overnight, and out-of-state field trip requests, coordinating with transportation, principals, risk management, and district administration as appropriate.
Develop and maintain field trip policies, procedures, and guidance documents; provide training and support to staff responsible for trip planning and supervision.
Identify and address systemic issues in field trip equity and access, working to ensure that all students have meaningful opportunities to participate in learning outside the classroom.
Maintain appropriate documentation and records for district field trip activity; respond to incidents and concerns related to student travel in a timely and appropriate manner.
Title IX Compliance & Civil Rights Oversight
Serve as the district’s designated Title IX Coordinator, ensuring the district’s full compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 across all programs and activities.
Receive, review, and coordinate the investigation and resolution of Title IX complaints and allegations, working in close coordination with Human Resources, and legal counsel.
Monitor student participation data across athletic programs to identify gender equity gaps; develop and implement corrective action plans as needed.
Ensure all athletics and activities staff receive annual training on Title IX obligations, prohibited conduct, and reporting requirements.
Maintain accurate records of Title IX compliance activities, complaint investigations, and corrective actions; prepare reports for district leadership as required.
Stay current on evolving federal and state Title IX regulations and guidance; advise district leadership on implications for programming and policy.
Requirements
EDUCATION: Master’s degree in education administration, athletic administration, or a closely related field preferred; Bachelor’s degree required.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in athletic administration, student activities administration, or a related educational leadership role.
Demonstrated experience managing complex, multi-site programs with responsibility for staff supervision, budgeting, and compliance oversight.
Experience working with WIAA regulations, ASB finance law, and/or Title IX compliance strongly preferred.
Experience in a central office or district-level administrative role preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Deep knowledge of WIAA policies, state and federal regulations governing interscholastic athletics, ASB law, and Title IX requirements.
Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams, build collaborative relationships, and manage conflict effectively.
Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with students, families, staff, and community partners.
Proficiency in data analysis and using data to inform program decisions and equity planning.
Commitment to educational equity, diversity, and inclusion; demonstrated ability to lead programs that serve the full range of student identities and backgrounds.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound professional judgment, and work effectively under pressure.
